The fact that page 2 of their instruction manual contains a product disclaimer that the devise is an "entertainment devise only" I would have serious doubts about it's effectiveness.  The warning that the company makes no claim to the validity of data received by the devise and the further warning that the devise may generate disturbing text and speech, indicates further research is needed before even considering it's use in actual investigations.  Any devise that records evps can generate disturbing things, but those are recording of actual events, not something that was independently generated.  Until the validity of what the devise generates can be verified with a reasonable amount of accuracy, it should not be relied on for evidence.  IMVHO.

"...may generate disturbing text and speech..."??

That makes it sound like a Ouija board. No thank you.

Let me say that I don't know if the Ovilus works or not (I tend to be skeptical). However, much has been made of the fact that the manufacturer lists on the site that the device is "for entertainmant purposes only". What everyone has to understand is that, for liability reasons, the manufacturer must say this. If not, he (Bill Chappell) could be held legally liable if someone slightly unstable acted in a negative manner on information obtained from the device. This is a standard legal disclaimer, nothing more, so you have to see beyond what you "think" it means. Many people on the Web have also stated that the manufacturers of their KII meters, digital cameras, etc. do not say that on their sites about the equipment. That is absolutely correct, they don't...because they don't have to. They're not claiming their products communicate or take pictures of the dead, that's just how some consumers choose to use them. The manufacturer of the Ovilus implicity makes that claim, even printing "Handheld Paranormal Device" on the product intself, therefore, the manufacturer must have the legal disclaimer.

I have been on an investigation where someone was using the PUCK.  I had mixed feelings on it.  At the time the words that were generated were seemed rather random. However there were words that kept repeating.  I can't say that it really provided any info that was useful at the time.  However, upon a "sensitive" going to the residence after that initial investigation there did seem to be some correlation between some words the PUCK generated and what the sensitive came up with.  Coincidence, maybe.  I am not sold on it but would like to be able to use it again.
