Color Meaning in the Bible

Most of us know our birthstone and it's color meaning, but did you know these colors with meaning may have come from the bible? It was approximately 1300 B.C. when gemstones and color meaning began to have religious significance. Aaron, the brother of Moses was appointed the high priest by God. In the book of Exodus God gave specific instructions as to how to fashion the Breastplate of Aaron and exactly where to place the precious stones.

Exodus 28:16-21 - "It is to be square - a span long and a span wide - and folded double. Then mount four rows of precious stones on it.

In the first row there shall be a ruby, a topaz and a beryl:
In the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald:
In the third row a jacinth, and agate and a amethyst:
In the fourth row a chrysolite, and onyx and a jasper.
Mount them in gold filigree settings. There are to be twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the tribes". (NIV)

The twelve stones each representing one of the Twelve tribes of Israel are said to be of the zodiac signs of that time. The Jewish People choose their birthstones based on their tribal names. Over the years there have been a number of lists with color meaning
